Phil Hughes

I was watching the Yankees lose to the Mets last night :( and as I watched Phil Hughes pitch I noticed on his glove "Hughes 65" and over it "Phil 4:13" stitched in hid glove. (you can sort of see it in the picture above) Its especially noticeable when the cameras do a close on him with his glove up to his face. Pretty Cool. It is a reference to Phil 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I did a little research on the web and also came up with this tattoo he has on his arm.

Ironman 2 and American Capitalism

I went and saw Ironman 2 last week with my son Benjamin. I was disappointed. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 4 maybe. But after I saw this my score might have to rise a bit - Check "We are Ironman" on Afterburner on PJTV.com

Gospel in Life

I have used this before to compare the Gospel and Religion - it comes from Tim Keller and his new DVD series "Gospel in Life."

Reason has given way to rhetoric

"Given the contemporary cultural climate, it is easier to get people to buy a product, join a movement, or accept a set of ideas if you use rhetoric, appeal to emotions and felt needs, and set aside a rational presentation of the topic at hand. But the short-term 'successes' of such an approach can dull us to the long term harm that can be done by taking this easy way out. As British sociologist and theologian Os Guinness has argued, the Devil will allow short-term success in evangelism and church growth if the means used to achieve it ultimately contribute to the marginalization of the church and her message. In this case, the church becomes her own gravedigger. By eschewing the role of reason in evangelism and substituting in its place an overemphasis on a simple gospel appeal, directed at felt needs, short-term gains are to be expected in a culture of empty selves. But who can deny that while our numbers have grown, our impact has not been proportionate to our numbers?" (p.130)

God is an Entrepreneur

This is an excellent clip from Tim Keller.
From the opening:
"God was an entrepreneur. He brought something out of nothing. He brought order out of chaos. And why did He do it? He did it, not because He had to, He did it because He wanted to. He did it for the joy of doing it. Creativity, it was just a joy to do. It wasn't a means to an end. It was the end itself. And this, I think, is important because we're made in His image. And therefore you don't really need a reason to create or to start something new. You don't really need a reason. Because...there's a sense in which God did not have to do it. He did it for the joy of doing it. And when you and I know we're made in the image of God it shouldn't surprise us that for a lot of us, especially those who are gifted in this particular area, we do it because we're just reflecting our Creator."

Yahweh

I heard yesterday that Bono from U2 turned 50 yesterday. Makes me feel old. I still remember when i first heard about U2 in High School - they were what the punk crowd or 'heads' listened to - them and "10,000 maniacs" & "echo and the bunny men" - who knew how huge they would be

- here is one of their newer songs - one of my favorites - singing about Yahweh
- I find that Bono can sing about God & grace better than most so called 'Christian bands'

Take these shoes
Click clacking down some dead end street
Take these shoes
And make them fit
Take this shirt
Polyester white trash made in nowhere
Take this shirt
And make it clean, clean
Take this soul
Stranded in some skin and bones
Take this soul
And make it sing

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I'm waiting for the dawn

Take these hands
Teach them what to carry
Take these hands
Don't make a fist no
Take this mouth
So quick to critisize
Take this mouth
Give it a kiss

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I'm waiting for the dawn

Still waiting for the dawn, the sun is coming up
The sun is coming up on the ocean
His love is like a drop in the ocean
His love is like a drop in the ocean

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, tell me now
Why the dark before the dawn?

Take this city
A city should be shining on a hill
Take this city
If it be your will
What no man can own, no man can take
Take this heart
Take this heart
Take this heart
And make it brave

Renewing our Minds

I’m reading an excellent book, “Love your God with all your mind” by JP Moreland which seems to have little profound nuggets of wisdom on every page. Here is one that hit me hard. I am always amazed with people who basically tell me that they never learn anything ‘new’ from the Bible. They have been in church their whole lives and have it all figured out. The problem is that we settle too easily into an intellectual rut in our learning….

“If we’re honest with ourselves, we have to admit that we get into ruts in our thinking and develop habit of thought that can grow stale after awhile. This is where renewing the mind comes in. A life of study can give us a constant source of new categories and beliefs that will lead us to fresh insights and stave off intellectual boredom. Many people become bored with the Bible precisely because their overall intellectual growth is stagnant. They cannot get new insights from Scripture because they bring the same old categories to Bible Study and look to validate their old habits of thought.”

Amazing Video made in 2008 which means it is already out of date
